About
Overtourism isn’t a people problem, it’s a systems problem.
The Destination Preservation Project™ is a new initiative created by the passionate team of designers, developers, and do-gooders at PixlBank. We are a tech startup that is empowering people to invest their social currency in social change.
We also love to travel. So when we learned about the negative impacts of ‘overtourism,’ we decided that we wanted to use our creativity and technology to help preserve, protect, restore, and show respect for the places we love – and those we hope to one day visit.
We came to realize that many people who visit a destination never really experience the rich culture, incredible history, or unique elements and environments that make that place special. This is often because they are getting their vacation tips and suggestions from social media, usually through content posted by non-residents. Unfortunately, this means that many visitors are being guided (influenced) by people who care more about likes, views, and follows, and less about the impact they may be having on a location.
We want to change this by creating experiences that produce more meaningful connections between person and place. Experiences that cause people to stop and think and hopefully inspire them to be more mindful, intentional, and respectful guests and stewards. These experiences will also be designed to share, so that we may create a perpetual cycle.
We also want to make it easy, fun, and rewarding for visitors to support local organizations who are doing the work to preserve, protect, and restore the Native Culture, the local communities, and the delicate ecosystems in each location.
Wherever we go, we will always listen to the people who call that place home. We will use their knowledge, their wisdom, and their experiences. And we will work together to create a better system.
